Bach's Orgelbüchlein remains an essential cornerstone of the organ repertoire. This set of chorale preludes, meticulously structured around the Christian liturgical calendar, shows both the textual and theological essence of the chorales he arranged. This workshop will explore the concept of liturgical numerology (as well as some additional musical symbolism) embedded within these works, examining how many scholars have identified and analyzed these symbolic numerical patterns. It will also consider how a deeper understanding of these symbolic elements can enhance our historical approach to performing these pieces, to show the underlying text and theological significance of the chorales.
